Scope and Content:

Fonds consists of records created and assembled by the Laidlaw Foundation. The records include: meeting minutes, correspondence, annual reports, financial reports, publications, grant project files, and other materials created by the Foundation's Board of Directors, committees, and grant recipients. The materials document the philanthropic and operational activities of the Foundation from its inception in 1949 until 2014. Additionally, the fonds also includes records produced by Nathan Gilbert in his capacity as Executive Director of the Foundation.


The fonds has been arranged into 10 series.


Administrative History or Biographical Sketch:

The Laidlaw Foundation was established in 1949 by Walter C. and Robert A. Laidlaw to benefit charitable, educational, conservation and cultural organizations in Ontario. As of 2017, it is still in existence.

Access to some of the files in sub-series F 4699-1-2 and the entirety of series F 4699-4 and F 4699-5 are restricted due to personal and financial information. To access these records, permission must be obtained from the Executive Director of the Laidlaw Foundation. Please see series descriptions for further information.

Immediate Source of Acquisition: The records were donated to the Archives of Ontario in 2017 by the Laidlaw Foundation.
Custodial History: The Laidlaw Foundation hired the consulting firm, Heritage Professionals, to undertake the archival appraisal, selection, processing, preservation and description work. Only records possessing archival value have been retained. The materials have been arranged according to archival standards and placed in acid-free folders and boxes. A finding aid in the form of a file list was produced by the same firm and is available online.
