Scope and Content:

Fonds consists primarily of photographic glass plate negatives as well as some prints and acetate negatives created by J.C. Smith in his role as an amateur photographer in Ridgetown, Ontario in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Subjects include individuals, families, residential and commercial architecture, schools, cottages, and tombstones in or near Ridgetown.

Immediate Source of Acquisition: The fonds was donated to the Archives of Ontario in 2017 by the creator's great-grandson, John Smith.

Smith was choir master for 25 years. Related records may also be found in F 687, Hagaman & Jull family fonds. J.C. Smith worked at the Hagaman & Jull General Store in his youth.

The Archives of Ontario Library also holds one copy of Ridgetown Album: Historical Homes and Landmarks, 1875-1975, which includes reproductions of many of the glass plate negatives in this fonds.
