Date of Creation: 1893-1914
Physical Description:

Scope and Content:

Sub-series consists records relating to the allocation of land for Indian reserves in northern Ontario. Included are copies of documentation relating to specific treaties (the Robinson-Huron and Robinson- Superior Treaties) which appear to have been compiled as background for the Treaty No. 9 negotiations. The sub-series contains a draft memorandum prepared at the direction of the Attorney General by Aemilius Irving concerning Ontario's position in these negotiations as well as correspondence, memoranda, and reports as well as background material. Many of the documents are annotated.

Sub-series also contains two registers consisting of "Pay lists for reserves for Treaty Payment, 1905". These lists were maintained by Duncan C. Scott, Samuel Stewart, and Daniel G. McMartin, in their capacity as Treaty Commissioners for the James Bay Treaty of 1905 - Treaty No. 9. Within each register, entries are grouped by community/reserve and then by "Dominion Indian" and "Ontario Indian". Information is entered under the following headings: Band #; name; # in family (men, women, boys, girls); and amount paid. Many entries contain additional notations concerning family relationships and the position of the head of the household in the community (i.e., chief, councillor, etc.). The first register contains entries for the following reserves/communities: Osnaburgh I.R. No. 63B; Fort Hope; and Martens Falls I.R. No. 65. The second register contains entries for the following reserves/communities: English River; Fort Albany I.R. No. 67; Moose Factory; and New Post.
