Date of Creation: 1849-1850, 1865, 1870-1874
Physical Description:

1 volume of textual records

Scope and Content:

Series consists of a single volume used at different periods to record various types of information relating to emigration to the Province of Canada and later, Ontario.

Between 1849 and 1850, the volumes contains transcribed copies of outgoing correspondence from the Emigrant Agent at Kingston (A.B. Hawke Jr.), including letters to the Chief Emigrant Agent for Canada West (A.B. Hawke Sr.) which summarize expenditures and characteristics of arriving immigrants, and to the Chief Emigrant Agent at Quebec, A.C. Buchanan, regarding policy matters, problems, and details on arriving immigrants. Subjects include: labour and transportation conditions, orphaned children, cholera outbreaks, and the emigrant hospital at Kingston. The entries for this period are chronological.

In 1865, the volume was used in the Toronto Emigrant Office for recording several types of information, including: a one-page register of Home Children ("Number of Boys sent out from [illegible] and Middlesex and other Schools", including dates, names, and destinations); a two-page register of immigrants arriving via Quebec, New York, and Boston who received assistance (no names are given); and a one-page register of immigrants arriving via Boston and New York who intended to settle in Canada (names of family head are given).

Between 1870 and 1874 the volume was used to record a listing of available accommodations (1871-1874) and employment (1870-1874) in Toronto and the surrounding areas. Such listings were used by emigrant agents to assist newly-arrived immigrants in finding lodgings and employment. The various sections are scattered throughout the volume, not always in chronological order, and appear both upside-down and right-side up.
