Toronto Emigrant Office assisted immigration registers

Reference Code: Series - RG 11-3
Title: Toronto Emigrant Office assisted immigration registers
Date of Creation: 1865-1883
Physical Description:

4 volumes of textual records

Scope and Content:

Series consists of registers containing mainly statistical information on immigrants receiving assistance from the Toronto Emigration Office.

These registers were kept to monitor spending, track trends for future reference, and possibly also to prevent abuse of the system by repeaters. Information recorded typically includes: date of application; name [of individual or head of family]; nationality; number of men, women, and children; assistance given [loaves of bread, temporary shelter etc.]; by what ship or steamer [arrived]; where landed; date of departure; and destination [usually in Ontario]. Note that personal names of immigrants from continental European countries other than Germany were not always recorded. Entries are chronological.
